Apricot of the Dessert variety was bred by specialists from the Department of Fruit Growing and Horticulture in the Voronezh Agricultural Institute by pollinating the West European apricot Luisa with a pollen mixture of the well-known Michurinsky varieties Tovarishch and Best Michurinsky.

The authorship of the variety belongs to A. N. Venyaminov and L. A. Dolmatova. Apricot Dessert, early in terms of crop ripening, is recommended for cultivation in private farms on the territory of the Central Black Earth Region.

Botanical grade description

Dessert apricot trees have excellent winter hardiness and are characterized by strong growth. Apricot crown is thick and has a wide, rounded shape. The height of adult plants reaches 5 m or more. Flower buds are characterized by average winter hardiness. The variety belongs to the category of self-fertile, which makes it attractive for home gardening.

Fruiting plants enter approximately the fourth year after planting. Distinctive features of the variety are increased indicators of resistance to diseases and the warming of tree bark in both adult and young fruit plants.

Fruit characterization

Dessert apricot fruits are above average, may exceed 29-31 g in weight. The surface of the fetus is lightish, with a subtle blush on the base. The skin is relatively thin. Ripe pulp has a delicate texture, light yellow staining. It is characterized by an excellent sweet and sour dessert flavor.

The stone is small, occupies no more than 8-10% of the volume of apricot. At the stage of complete ripening of the fruit, it is easily separated from the ripe pulp. Qualitative indicators of fruits make it possible to evaluate the Dessert apricot as one of the best northern varieties. Dessert apricot seedlings are preferable to plant in the early spring, using warm and bright areas for landing. Optimal survival rates are observed when planting plants that are sold in containers on standard educators. The pit for planting apricot seedlings should have dimensions corresponding to the volumes of the root system of planting material.

The trees grow and develop best when grown on well-aerated soils with little lime. You can not plant apricot seedlings in lowlands, where a frequent occurrence is the accumulation of cold air masses that are detrimental to a heat-loving crop. Drainage should also be carried out at the site.

Immediately after planting, young plants need to be watered abundantly, and it is recommended to mulch the soil in the trunk circles for the first three years with humus or peat crumb.

  • as organic fertilizer, manure is most often used, which should be applied every two or three years at the rate of 4 kg per square meter;
  • In order to protect garden trees from being affected by the most common and dangerous diseases and pests, plants are treated with insectofungicides several times during the period of active vegetation.

Winter preparations

Apricot variety "Dessert" has a fairly high winter hardiness. Nevertheless, to preserve the productive ability of fruit stands, especially when cultivated in regions with harsh winters, it is recommended to warm the apricot. A good result is the use of roofing felt or roofing material, which should be wrapped in the stem of heat-loving trees.

Before warming apricot, the following preparatory measures should be carried out without fail:

  • collection and destruction of fallen leaves;
  • digging of soil in near-stem circles;
  • removal of mummified and rotten fruits;
  • sanitary pruning;
  • processing the crown of trees from wintering plant parasites;
  • the implementation of the winter whitewash of the stem.

Equally important is the mulching of trunks, which will facilitate wintering of the root system of plants. The standard layer of mulch should be about 15 cm. The material may be peat, humus, compost or sand mixed with sawdust. Mulching is carried out before the onset of sustained cold weather.
